More information on being a Disciple of Jesus Christ!

M. J. Wilkins, “Disciples and Discipleship,” in Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Second Edition, ed. Joel B. Green, Jeannine K. Brown, and Nicholas Perrin (Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2013), 205.

No matter how we refer to the call to know Jesus Christ, the process is a wonderful blend of loving, learning, and leading others and being led to recognize God at the center of our universe.

In the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, we find a better definition of discipleship: "As Jesus’ ministry unfolds, he begins to establish a form of discipleship that is unlike the rabbis. With Jesus, the initiative lay with his call (Mt 4:19; 9:9; Mk 1:17; 2:14; cf. Lk 5:10–11, 27–28) and his choice (Jn 15:16) of those who would be his disciples. The response to the call involves recognizing and believing in Jesus’ identity (Jn 2:11; 6:68–69), obedience to His summons (Mk 1:18, 20), and counting the cost of full allegiance to Him (Lk 14:25–28; Mt 19:23–30). His calling is the beginning of something new. It means losing one’s old life (Mk 8:34–37; Lk 9:23–25) and finding new life in the family of God through obeying the will of the Father (Mt 12:46–50)." There are many metaphors for Discipleship, such as:

  • Sojourners of the Dispersion (1 Peter 1:1)

  • Walking in the Light (1 John 1:7)

  • The Christian Life (1 Cor. 7:24)

  • Pleasing Christ (2 Cor. 5:9)

  • Drawing near to God (James 4:8-10)

  • Fellow-Workers with the Truth (3 John 8)

  • A Prosperous Soul (3 John 2)

  • ‘Walk in the Spirit’ (Gal. 5:16)
